They obviously were not taught what you thought they already knew how to do. You backed off and started over on something a bit easier for them. Keep taking the small steps needed for them to understand before moving on. Can you even imagine what you would have gotten for a research paper if you just asked them for one at the end of the semester? Now that would have been disappointing.
